kateri mcpherson - 7/22/2008 4:45:37 PM
Blaine, washington state, US
Hello< I would like to find my biological father! I have been told he is/was Metis',I believer from Vancouver Island and his surname may have been Thom or McLeod. He would have had an affair with my mother, Shirlie C., from Bellingham/Washington,she conceived me while seperated from horrible man . I was conceived in or around ecember 1953, I think in White Rock, BC.My mother Shirlie C. (maiden name B___) was very beautiful, dark haired, french-looking,socially succesful from Bellingham, Washington, born in 1928.My biological father would now be around 80, if he is still living. I have strongly Metis features and colouring, I am 5'2 and a bit stocky, gifted as a speaker and writer, and am told I utterly took after him. I met an elder from Duncan at this year's Lummi Stommish who further corroborated my understanding of who my father was/ that I am connected to Metis family on Vancouver Island. Can anyone help me? God bless you- email me at celerity300@yahoo.com. Thank you.

Kwe Kwe,
I am looking for my Metis father Peter John Charlebois believed to be from Saskatoon. Any info regarding him or any other family members would be greatly appreciated as my roots, history, culture, language and people are VERY important to me and I cannot continue on this enlightened journey without knowing. I have little details to offer in aid of my search- he would be of approximately 52-53 yrs. young today, has one known sister other siblings unknown and his last known whereabouts were in Toronto 1978, and apparently left the concrete then to go back out west.

For Kyla,
There were Touronds' fighting along side Riel.
They(brothers)also died on the battle field on their own land,Tourond's Coulee, but better known as Fish Creek by the English. There was a Jean-Baptiste Tourond on Riel's Counsel. He would have been my ggggrand uncle, I think.
He probably was the son of Joseph Tourond and Rosalie Laderoute, my 3ed great-grand parents. You can read more about him in Maggie Siggins's book "Riel A Life Of Revolution."

HI again everyone! I have recently came across a book titled "Lac La Biche Yesterday and Today". I really enjoyed the book for it has alot of information of the history Lac La Biche & area. I have actually learned more of my family history. I have learned that my great grandparents on both sides are Fred Callioux & Victoria Berard. Cleophas Thompson & Rose (Whitford) Thompson. I found out where they first settled, some of their siblings. Id like to find out more info on further history of all great grandparents. I know My great Grandma Rose had brothers named Edwin, William and Jack Charles Whitford. They moved from Sask River lots in 1932 to the Grandin/ Beaver River area.
Its nice to be back to this site, and looking forward to returning someday soon...

Thornhill Ontario
Tansi,
My name is Charlie Fife, my great grand parents are Christine Calliou and Archie Fiffle, Christine's bith certificate states parents are Michel Callihoo and Philemaine Collins. I have been researching my family for about 15 years and hold about 400 pages of historical documentation. I am trying to contact other descendants of the Michel Band, it is very likely that I have documentation that others do not, it would have be beneficial to all concerned if we were able to share each others information. On my fathers side all my ancestors are Michel Band, names include-L'Hirondelle, Seguin/Laderoute, Gladu, Collins, Belcourt, Callihoo, Bison, Plante, Gray, Karhiio, Patenaude and Fiffle.

10 Years ago I was attending the college in Lac La Biche taking my Native Artisan course. We were taught by Ruby Sweetman and Kathy Macanno . We learned to make baskets from Red Willow . Unfortunately in Southern B.C. it does not grow here . I am interested in being in touch with someone who could or would get me some and put it on the bus and send it to me . I would of course pay for this service . And Birch Bark is another.

Would be interesting to know wouldnt it? I am looking to any information concerning my mother who's been deceased now 10 yrs. This is a message for Mr. Clayton Cunningham - perhaps a bit (two years) overdue, but I enjoyed your article "What If You're An Indian?". In any event, small world; I stumbled onto this site idontknowhowbutsomehowbecauseitstheinternet and saw you and thought, "Nooo, it can't be...". Because you're just Clayton From Cliff's Who Drinks Grasshopper and Sings Karaoke. And Cliff's doesn't exist anymore.
(Am I allowed to go on like this in a guestbook message that you may never end up reading? I apologise to Trevor and Felice if this sort of thing is frowned upon.)
Anyway, great website! Very informative. I also like all the Joke of the Months. New A-material, don't you know...

Fort Macleod Alberta
I would like to thank the people in the office of metis local 2003 for their hard work and dedication in help the people find their history. Also to the board of directors what a good job they have done with the amount of stuff they have to put up with from others.
I would also like to say that in 2005 that D
&B Campbell Brothers along with Campbell Cats both 100% owned by metis men took the time to move a house that was here in Fort Macleod Alberta to the Barracks which is a place where the North West Mounted Police were first stationed. This house was very old and had a hole in the top by the roof and the story is that Jerry potts use to have the pigons fly in and then he would shoot them and thats they way they would eat. Also D & B Campbell Brothers had to make sure that the house was lifted up even to be placed on the trailer and hauled to the Barracks square which is in Fort Macleod Alberta.

As I sit and read the latest on historical, family, political, and even funny events and stories. We are a unique breed of people, where we have bought 2 worlds together, the old and new. We have always stood on our own as a nation. The older I get the more I learn about being Metis, the more I know "it is who we are deep down." I feel so proud to be Metis. Trevor and Felice, you have done a wonderfuljob in respreseenting the Metis people, local, nationally and internationally.

This site is a tool to connect Metis People and thier stories with other Metis in Canada. I was brought up in Vogar, a Metis Community. My grandparents worked hard on this land and they were a happy People, despite the poverty they came from they never looked at themselves as being poor. To me they were strong Metis People and that's how I feel we are all stong people. Thanks, I'll use the site when I need information about what's going on in Metis country.

WOW! Great job Felice, Trevor and everyone else on the Metis Matters production team, bravo, keep it up. It's really nice to see a sharing of our Metis culture from people who do it for the LOVE and not the money, it really makes a big difference as to how we are perceived as a people. Too many people are in it for the money today and thats sad. I am a Metis Dancer and all too often my fellow entertainers across the province are only in it for the money, rather then the joys of actually being able to keep our spirits alive through the sharing of our dances and knowledge of our past, present and most importantly our future! I have a young daughter who I am passing on my skills too, she is the future. I admire your great work and look forward to reading all future issues. LONG LIVE THE METIS NATION!! ~Peace~

I would also like to congradulate the members of the Red River Metis Heritage Group from Manitoba for doing such a great job planning and completing the first leg of the two year Red River Cart and Wagon journey from St.Norbert to Batoche. What an adventure it was traversing the trails and valleys of Manitoba to end the first segment some 320 miles later in San Clara.Just a few miles from the Saskatchewan border the group now stands ready to complete the second segment of the journey from San Clara to Batoche in 2005.We look forward in joining Saskatchewan in their Centennial celebrations on the way to Batoche as we also celebrate Metis culture.
